» Food Drive
- The Industrial Technology (INT) department donated the most total food with 5,523 items.
- The Programmable Logic Controls (PLC) team had the highest student-to-food ratio with 72 items per student.
» RankCan Sculpture Competition
- First Place was awarded to the INT team with their sculptures depicting the holidays of President’s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans/Memorial Day.
- Second Place was awarded to the PLC team for their "Santa’s Army" display.
- Third Place was awarded to the HVACR team for their "Snowman" display.
Thank you to all of the teams that participated in this years event. The total amount of food items collected so far is 10,156 which is over 1,000 more than last year. The purpose of the annual food drive and RankCAN creations event is to help feed the hungry in the St. Louis area during the holiday season and to exhibit the technical skills of our students. Over the last 10 years, the Ranken food drive has resulted in over 65,000 food products being donated throughout the local community and Ranken students in need.
The first place teams receive a pizza party for winning the competitions.

On Wednesday, October 4, Francis Slay, Mayor of the City of St. Louis, visited Ranken’s campus. Along with the Mayor, Robbyn Wahby, the Mayor’s education aide and Michael Holmes, executive director of St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE), were taken on a tour by members of Ranken administration.
The first part of the tour included visiting the carpentry shop, the JM & A call center and Precision Machining. While in the machine shop, Mayor Slay spoke with a second year PMT student, Jaryd Patton about the project he was working on.
After leaving the Cook building, the group was led on a tour of Walker Hall by Jeremy Sutton and LaTrina Rogers. The Mayor was very impressed by the new dormitory and the programs and culture change that Walker Hall has brought to campus.
The end of the tour included visits to High Performance Racing Technology, the space which is the future home of the Fabrication and Welding Technology program and the Industrial Technology labs. The Mayor was impressed with the technology available at Ranken and the mock homes that the INT students have the opportunity to build.
The group’s final stop was at the new homes being built on Evans Avenue. The Mayor was aware of Ranken’s RCDC program but was not aware of how many homes had been built or how much the program was helping to revitalize the community.

Don Pohl, vice president of academics spoke to the group in the morning offering a brief history of the College and some of the pros to a technical education. Guests were then taken to tour the program of their choice by an admissions counselor. Following the program tours attendees received information from the Admissions and Financial Aid offices and toured our new student housing in Walker Hall.
During lunch, Ranken’s new president, Stan Shoun, spoke and showed a video from the Department of Education that covered how quickly technology changes and how important a trained workforce is going to be in the next few years. Program tours were also offered in the afternoon and the day ended with attendance prizes and a drawing of two $500 scholarships. Congratulations to the counselors from North Technical High School and Francis Howell North High School for winning the drawing! Counselors at these two schools will be able to award these scholarships to seniors who would like to attend Ranken beginning in fall 2010.
The promotion will last from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in a specially designated CARSTAR section. CARSTAR will showcase two noteworthy vehicles – the Make-A-Wish “tricked out” truck and the CARSTAR Super’Stang. Matt, the wish recipient, will be in attendance to show off his vehicle.
The CARSTAR Super’Stang is a recreation of the 1967 Mustang, known for its powerful engine and legendary status. The CARSTAR Super’Stang has toured the country for the past 18 months on the CARSTAR Super’Stang Muscle Tour, benefiting Make-A-Wish.
Renowned drag racer Danny Miller will be on Ranken's campus Tuesday, January 20th to give a presentation on his industry experience. Ranken is assisting Mr. Miller in the repainting of his funny car, pictured below:
The presentation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Miller will be addressing students from the Automotive Collision Repair program, the Automotive Maintenance program and the High Performance Racing Technology program, as well as visiting students from local tech high schools.
This week the 2008 Food Drive and RankCan competition was held and the winners were announced on Wednesday, November 19. Results: >> Food Drive - The Industrial Technology department donated the most total food (4,659 items) and also had the highest student-to-food ratio (82 items per student). >> RankCan Sculpture Competition - First Place - Student Government Association (SGA) for their "Willy’s Jeep" display - Second Place- Information Technology division for their "Nintendo/Mario Brothers" display - Third Place- Industrial Technology (INT) department for their "INT Shop" display The total amount of food items collected was 8,853! INT and SGA will receive a pizza party. Thank you to all of the Ranken students that participated in helping our community. The food is donated to two local church food panties (Pleasant Green & Lane Tabernacle), to Ranken students in need, and other local organizations.
